The wonderful region of Poitou-Charentes is situated in the south-west of France, with miles of beautiful Atlantic coastline and fabulous beaches of popular resorts such as Royan, Fouras, Oleron, and Chatelailon. Medieaval La Rochelle, of course, is the major gateway and port to Poitou-Charentes, and Poitiers is the regional capital. The region is made up of four departments, Charente, Charente-Maritime, Vienne and Deux-Sevres, and, apart from Poitiers, the other main towns of the region are La Rochelle, Saintes, roman Angouleme and Royan but, of course, one of the most well-known names of the region is Cognac. Apart from producing this world-famous tipple, the seafaring history of the region ensures its production of oysters and mussels, the most revered of which are said to be produced in Marenne-Oleron. Key airports are Poitiers, Rochefort and La Rochelle, and the TGV connects from Lille to Poitiers.
