Just north of Naples, downtown Fort Myers is situated inland on the south side of the Caloosahatcheee River inlet. The main tourist areas and beaches are found on the narrow islands or Keys running along the coast and joined to the mainland at both ends by causeways. At the south end of these islands is 'Lovers Key' a 712-acre state park which supports a wide variety of bird life, fish and other aquatic animals and is a popular area for boating, walking and swimming in the lagoons. Fort Myers beach itself is stunning; long, gently curving with gleaming white powder-fine sand. As is typical along the Gulf Coast there is very little development on the beach with hotels and apartment complexes providing facilities within their own grounds. Backing the beach the main boulevard stretches the length of the island and is lined with friendly eateries and bars, choose from casual Mexican, 'fast food' and plenty of fresh fish of course. Towards the north of the island is an area called Times Square, this hub of busy restaurants, bars and beach-shops is a great spot for couples and families with pavement dining and a laid-back atmosphere. At the end of the evening there are several bars adjoining the beach where you can relax with a nightcap and watch the moonlit waves.
