Iznajar
Iznajar is one of the most southerly villages of the province of Cordoba, a beautiful, traditional Andalucian village with a magnificent castle and lake in a truly wonderful setting. Easily reached from the main Granada to Seville road, it is also served by the airports of Granada and Malaga. Because of its location, Iznajar acts as the gateway to the Sierra Subeticas Natural Park and convenient for the cities of Cordoba, Granada and Málaga.
You can lose yourself in the tiny alleys of whitewashed stone walls in the older part of the village, whilst the lower, newer district has the large town square called Plaza Nueva, from where there are spectacular views across the surrounding countryside, rich with beautiful silvery green olive trees. The huge lake is actually man made, and now hosts a series of fishing competitions and, of course, acts as the town's "seafront".
You are, of course in the heart of the Andalucian countryside with its rich culture fused by the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures over the centuries. There are lively festivals, expecially around Easter, a bustling local market, and of course traditional cuisine, based around the region's staple of pork. This is Spain as you may never have imagined and an experience to be savoured. Enjoy!
